A quick note: This independent educational guide is not financial advice. Digital assets involve risk, and transactions may be irreversible. Always verify details using official Exodus resources before taking action.

01 — GETTING STARTED

Make it yours.

01 / 03

A Web3 wallet is an app that helps you manage digital assets and connect to decentralized applications. With a self-custody wallet, you—not a platform—control access to your wallet. That freedom comes with responsibility: your recovery phrase is the key.

01↓

Get the genuine app

Use Exodus’ official website or the official Apple App Store, Google Play Store, or browser extension listing. Check the publisher and URL carefully. Search ads, messages, and unsolicited links can lead to convincing fakes. Never install a wallet from a link sent by a stranger.

02✳

Create a new wallet

Open the app and follow its setup instructions. If you’re creating a new wallet, take time to understand each screen. The wallet is designed to give you control; Exodus does not hold your secret recovery phrase for you. Do not share your screen while setting up.

A FEW MINUTES
03⌁

Pause before you move

Explore the interface before adding funds. Locate your receive addresses, asset list, and security options. Make sure you understand which network an asset uses. A little orientation now can prevent costly mistakes later. You never need to rush a crypto transaction.

02 — YOUR MOST IMPORTANT BACKUP

Recovery phrase.
Real-world rules.

Your recovery phrase (also called a secret recovery phrase) is the master backup for your wallet. Anyone who has it may be able to access your funds. Treat it like the keys to your home—except there is no locksmith who can reset it if it’s lost.

THE SAFE-KEEPING CHECKLIST⌑
✓

Write it down offline. Store it somewhere private and physically secure.

✓

Keep it to yourself. Exodus support will never need you to reveal it.

✓

Skip screenshots and cloud notes. Online copies can be exposed if an account or device is compromised.

✓

Beware of urgent requests. No legitimate helper needs your phrase to troubleshoot.

!

Never type your phrase into a website, chat, form, or shared document. Anyone asking for it is not helping you recover access safely.

03 — FIRST TRANSACTIONS

Start small. Check twice.

YOUR FIRST SEND

When you’re ready to receive an asset, open that asset in your wallet and choose its receive option. Copy the address or scan its QR code, then confirm the asset and network match the sending platform exactly. Networks with similar names are not interchangeable.

For a first transfer, consider sending a small test amount if fees make it practical. Confirm the address character by character—especially the beginning and end—and remember that transaction fees may apply. Transfers can take time to confirm; avoid repeating a send just because it has not appeared instantly.

To send, open the correct asset, choose send, and paste the recipient’s address. Check the network, amount, and estimated fee on the confirmation screen. If anything looks unfamiliar, cancel and verify through trusted official documentation first.

If one answer is “not sure,” take a pause. A few moments of checking are worth it.
A WORLD OF APPS, ON YOUR TERMS

Curiosity is a
good first step.

Web3 applications can let you explore decentralized finance, digital collectibles, and on-chain communities. Connecting a wallet does not mean every request is safe. Start with well-known applications, read what a connection or signature asks you to do, and only approve actions you understand.

GOOD TO KNOW

Common questions.

What does self-custody mean?+

Self-custody means you control your wallet’s private keys and recovery phrase. It gives you direct control, but also means you are responsible for backing up your phrase securely and protecting your devices.

Can I recover a lost password?+

Wallet password and recovery processes vary by product and device. Use only official Exodus support instructions for your exact platform. A support representative should never ask you to send them your secret recovery phrase.

Why do I need to check the network?+

The same asset may exist on more than one blockchain, and addresses or transfer methods may differ. Sending through an unsupported or mismatched network can result in assets that are difficult or impossible to recover.

Should I connect to every dApp?+

No. Research an application before connecting, review each prompt, and avoid signing messages or transactions you do not understand. You can disconnect applications, but disconnecting alone does not necessarily revoke token approvals.
